Classroom Information

We understand that you and your child may have excitement and/or apprehension for the upcoming school year. We hope this website will let you know what to expect in Kindergarten and answer any questions you may have. We look forward to working with you and your children this school year. Our goal is to instill the love for learning and provide a nurturing and supportive environment for all children.

Parent Volunteers

We strongly encourage you to volunteer in the classroom if you are able. We will, however, not be asking for classroom volunteer help until after we complete the first month of school. It is important for us, as your children’s teachers, to develop a bond and classroom routine with your children. Kindergartners can be easily distracted when their parents are in the classroom so we would like the chance to set the tone in our classrooms before parents come in to volunteer. We will send an e-mail asking your volunteering preferences at the beginning of the school year. From that information we will create a volunteer schedule so you will know exactly when you will be helping in our classrooms. If your child has difficulty focusing or completing his/her work while you are volunteering in the classroom, you may be asked to volunteer in another location in the building or to help from home.

“Hug and Go”

We ask that you hug your child at the Kindergarten classroom door and go. We will greet your child at the door as he or she enters so please do not walk your child all the way into the classroom. Please do not linger around the doors or windows as this makes the transition into the classroom more difficult for your child. We are unable to have conversations with you at drop off or pick up as our focus must be on the children. Please schedule a conference so we can give you our full attention. We are happy to meet with you before or after school. Just email us to set up a time.

Transportation

If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus or if you wish for your child to come home a different way than usual, you MUST send a written note/e-mail or call Parmalee’s front office a at (303) 982-8014. Kindergartners can be easily confused so we cannot take their word for how they will go home in the afternoon. If a written note, e-mail, or phone call is not received your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.

Outdoor Recess

The children will be going outside for recess everydayunless it is raining or snowing heavily. Please keep this in mind when helping your child select clothing for the day.

Specials

All students will participate in Art, Music, and PE. If your child does not wear sneakers, he or she will not be allowed to participate in PE that day. Your child's teacher will notify you of the specials schedule. Our classes will be going to the school library weekly for book check-out.

Money

On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. ALWAYS send money in a sealed envelope with the following information on it:

· Your child’s first and last name

· The amount of money

· The purpose for the money (lunch money, field trip money, etc.)

· Teacher’s name

School Time

8:50 a.m.-12:20 p.m. Half-day Kindergarten

8:50 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Full-Day Kindergarten

*Children are not allowed to arrive on campus before 8:45 a.m.

*Students are not allowed on the Kindergarten playground before or after school.

*Half-day students should be picked up promptly at 12:20 p.m. as the full-day students go to recess and lunch immediately after half-day dismissal.

Absences

The work we do in Kindergarten is either direct instruction or partner/group oriented. This means that we are unable to send make-up work home for your child to complete if he or she is absent from school. In the event your child will be absent from school, please call the attendance line at 303-982-8020. Please be aware that there will be times when teachers need to be absent from school for illness, professional development, or personal reasons.

Birthdays

Per the district's policy, you are NOT ALLOWED to send in edible treats for your child’s birthday. Some alternatives to edible treats are pencils, stickers, erasers, and bookmarks. Any items that you send in will be given out at some point during the day when it fits into our schedule. Parents/siblings do not come to the classroom for birthdays. You are welcome to come have lunch with your child in the cafeteria on his/her birthday if you would like. Please just sign in at the office before heading to the cafeteria.

Snack/Water

Half-day students will need to bring 1 snack. Full-day students will need to bring 2 snacks. Please make sure the snacks you send in for your child are nutritious. The following snacks are NOT allowed: dried fruit/raisins (they get squished into the carpet and cannot be removed), applesauce (they spill or explode), and yogurt (they also spill or explode). Feel free to send the above food items in your child's lunchbox for lunch in the cafeteria. Snacks that are pre-packaged and dry are best. The snacks should be something your child can open independently and eat quickly at his/her seat. We will only have 5-10 minutes for snack. We will send an e-mail to let you know of any food allergies in our class so you can be sensitive to other children’s needs when sending in your child’s snack. We will have snack mid-morning for all students and sometime after lunch for full-day students. We encourage you to send in a water bottle daily that your child can keep at his/her seat to make sure he/she stays hydrated throughout the day. Sippy-type bottles are best. Twist-top bottles are NOT allowed as they are very difficult for the kids to open and tend to spill. Only water should be sent to school. Juice, sports drinks, or sodas are also NOT allowed in the classrooms. Feel free to send these items in your child's lunchbox to have in the cafeteria.

Class Management

Our classroom rules will be created by your children on the first day of school. Rules typically look similar to what is listed below.

Kindergarten Rules

1. Be nice

2. Be responsible

3. Be safe
