October 3, 2016

Dear Parmalee Families,

It is hard to believe that we are now in the month of October. The fall color of the leaves seems to have already peaked and while the weather has been fairly warm, we are anticipating cooler weather in the next couple of days. This is just a reminder to make sure that your children are ready for the weather; students do go outside for recess unless the temperature and wind chill are too extreme for students to be outside for twenty minutes.

I want to thank everyone who attended parent/teacher conferences. These conversations are critical to our students' academic success. They are always valuable in ensuring that students are transitioning to school well and establishing the importance of open communication between home and school. I also want to thank those parents who provided dinner for our staff during conferences; we always enjoy the culinary talents of our parent community!

Finally, as students begin to plan their Halloween costumes, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • Classroom parties will be held on Monday, October 31, beginning at 2:30.

  • Halloween parade will begin at 2:15 p.m.

  • Weapons are not allowed to be part of any costume.

  • Masks are strongly discouraged.

  • Costumes should not be worn to school.

  • Costumes must be school appropriate.

  • Students should be able to put the costume on by themselves, or with minimal assistance.

  • Time will not be given to apply makeup or hair dye, which are not allowed to be applied at school. Many parents feel that putting makeup on before school is a good option; however, since we do have a full day of school, it tends to be very uncomfortable for students and distracting to the learning environment.

  • Parents may wear costumes, but adults cannot wear masks.

We would like to maintain the academic environment and strongly discourage parents from sending students with candy for snack or in their lunches after Halloween. As part of the festivities, we have invited historian John Voehl to come to Parmalee. John will be here on the morning of October 31 as Abe Lincoln, informing and sharing the unforgettable history of our 16th president of the United States with our students. We are all looking forward to this informative presentation which is being sponsored by our PTA. Parents can learn more about Mr. Voehl and his presentation at http://www.abelincolnalive.com/ .

Have a wonderful week.

Ingrid
