Hello, my name is Lesley Cantrell and I am excited to be your child’s Kindergarten teacher and I am thrilled to be joining the Parmalee staff! We are going to have so much fun learning, laughing and exploring this year! I truly love teaching and can’t imagine doing any other profession.

I received my Elementary degree from the University of Idaho. For the past 15 years, I have been working with primary children as a Kindergarten teacher, K-2 Reading and Math Interventionist, and Preschool teacher. This will be my fifth year teaching Kindergarten. I am certified in Elementary Education grades K-6.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and moved here from Idaho 18 years ago. I have a daughter finishing up her final year at the University of Idaho and a daughter that just started 7th grade. When I’m not teaching I enjoy gardening, being outdoors, kayaking, crafts, and spending time with my husband and our newly adopted dog, Daisy.

I understand that you and your child may have excitement and/or apprehension for the upcoming school year. I hope this web page will let you know what to expect in Kindergarten and answer any questions you may have. I look forward to working with you and your child this school year. My goal is to instill the love for learning and provide a nurturing and supportive environment for all children.

“Hug and Go”
I ask that you hug your child at the exterior Kindergarten classroom door and go. I will greet your child at the door as he or she enters so please do not walk your child all the way into the classroom. Please do not linger around the doors or windows as this makes the transition into the classroom more difficult for your child. I am unable to have conversations with you at drop off or pick up as my focus must be on the children. Please schedule a conference so I can give you my full attention. I am happy to meet with you before or after school. Email me to set up a time.

If you plan to pick up a child that normally rides the bus or if you wish for your child to come home a different way than usual, you MUST send a written note/e-mail AND call Parmalee’s front office at (303) 982-8014. Kindergartners can be easily confused so I cannot take their word for how they will go home in the afternoon. If a written note, e-mail, or phone call is not received your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation.

Outdoor Recess
The children will be going outside for recess everyday unless there is extreme weather. Please keep this in mind when helping your child select clothing for the day.

All full-day students will participate in Art, Music, and PE. Please make sure your child has sneakers for PE days.

On occasion it will be necessary for your child to bring money to school. ALWAYS send money in a sealed envelope with the following information on it:

·         Your child’s first and last name

·         The amount of money

·         The purpose for the money (lunch money, field trip money, etc.)

·         Teacher’s name

School Time

8:50 a.m.-11:30 a.m.     Half-day Kindergarten (2018-2019 school year)

8:50 a.m.-3:30 p.m.       Full-day Kindergarten

*Children are not allowed to arrive on campus before 8:45 a.m.

*Students are not allowed on the Kindergarten playground before or after school.

*Half-day students should be picked up promptly at 11:30 a.m.

The work we do in Kindergarten is either direct instruction or partner/group oriented. This means that I am unable to send make-up work home for your child to complete if he or she is absent from school. In the event your child will be absent from school, please call the attendance line at 303-982-8020. Please be aware that there will also be times when teachers need to be absent from school for illness, professional development, or personal reasons.

Half-day students will need to bring 1 snack. Full-day students will need to bring 2 snacks. Please make sure the snacks you send in for your child are nutritious. The following snacks are NOT allowed: dried fruit/raisins (they get squished into the carpet and cannot be removed), applesauce (they spill or explode), and yogurt (they also spill or explode). Feel free to send the above food items in your child's lunchbox for lunch in the cafeteria. Snacks that are pre-packaged and dry are best. The snacks should be something your child can open independently and eat quickly at his/her seat. We will only have 5-10 minutes for snack. I will send an e-mail to let you know of any food allergies in our class so you can be sensitive to other children’s needs when sending in your child’s snack. We will have snack mid-morning for all students and sometime after lunch for full-day students. I encourage you to send in a water bottle daily that your child can keep at his/her seat to make sure he/she stays hydrated throughout the day. Sippy-type bottles are best. Twist-top bottles are NOT allowed as they are very difficult for the kids to open and tend to spill. Only water should be sent to school. Juice, sports drinks, or sodas are also NOT allowed in the classrooms. Feel free to send these items in your child's lunchbox to have in the cafeteria.

Class Management
Our classroom rules will be created by your children on the first day of school. Our rules typically look similar to the list below:

1.   Be kind

2.   Be safe

3.   Be respectful

Parmalee Goes Paperless
Almost all information will be sent via e-mail or posted on this class website. Please make sure I have a current e-mail address for your family so you can receive all important classroom information. You will not receive any junk e-mail from me, only school communication.

The best way to reach me is via e-mail. My email address is I check my e-mail before and after school. If you send an email over the weekend or on a school break, you will receive a reply on the next school day. If you call during the day, the secretary will take a message and I will return your call as soon as possible. Calls will not be put directly through to the classroom during instruction.

Kind regards,
Lesley Cantrell
