Dear Parmalee Families,
I hope this letter finds you well. We are writing to inform you about anupcoming solar eclipse, and our plans regarding it at Parmalee.
On April 8th, between 11:30-1:50, a total solar eclipse will occur in partsof the country. We will have a partial eclipse in our area. We recognize theeducational value of events like this and the excitement they generate in ourcommunity. However, ensuring the safety of our students is our utmost priority.
After careful consideration and consultation with staff and other experts inour district, we have decided that Parmalee will not be organizing a viewingevent for the solar eclipse. This decision is based on safety concernsassociated with direct viewing of the sun, especially for young children.
While witnessing a solar eclipse can be an incredible experience, there is apotential for a significant risk to eye health if proper precautions are nottaken. The harmful rays of the sun can cause permanent damage to the retina, even during a partial eclipse when the sun is not fully obscured. We do nothave the necessary equipment or resources to ensure safe viewing for allstudents, which is why we have made this decision.
We understand that some families may wish to observe the eclipse together. If you choose to do so, we strongly urge you to take appropriate safetymeasures. You arewelcome to check your child out for the event at the office. Remember itis essential to use certified solar viewing glasses or other safe viewingmethods recommended by reputable sources, such as NASA.
Additionally, we encourage you to use this as an opportunity to engage yourchild in discussions about astronomy, science, and safety. There are manyresources available online that our teachers will have access to that willallow them to share and explore this event in a safe and educational manner.
As a reminder, students in 3rd/4th grade will be taking the CMAS EnglishLanguage Arts test in the morning between 8-10:15. After 10:15, once studentshave completed testing, teachers will have the opportunity to take theirclasses out for a 15-20 minute recess until 11:30. We will behaving all lunch/recess indoors that day as they fall during the peak timeframe of the eclipse.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. If you haveany questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Ingrid
