Band and Orchestra
Band and orchestra is offered at Parmalee Elementary for both beginning and advanced levels. The beginning level is for any fourth or fifth-grader who has not played an instrument before. The advanced level is for anyone who has played their instrument for at least one year, usually a fifth grader.
Band instruments include flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, French horn and percussion. Orchestra instruments include violin, viola, cello, and upright bass. Classes meet once per week after school from 2:45 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
Instrumental ensembles, such as band and orchestra, provide a unique opportunity for your student that is unlike any other activity. Learning to play an instrument is just the starting point of the journey. We believe that all students want to find success and want to belong. Students should feel like they have a place in the group, where their contributions are not only needed but are missed if not present in each class. Each class strives for meaningful outcomes, tangible goals and accountability (public performances and concerts).
Indeed, band and orchestra classes become strong communities and develop a bond of belonging that can last throughout elementary, middle, high school and beyond. Band and orchestra experiences provide our students with a special time to look forward to each week that is different from other school activities.
