Parmalee's Beautiful New Mural!

Parmalee students with muralParmalee Elementary has unveiled a very special piece of artwork. We are the proud recipient of a beautiful new wall mural in the school’s gymnasium. This original design is the work of local artists Chris Krieg and his son Will Krieg of Altitude Murals. The Parmalee staff and community would like to extend a huge thank you to Parmalee parents, Kim and David Krieg, who donated this extraordinary gift.

Chris and Will brought a beautiful array of colors and their imagination to the landscape piece, which prominently features two striking black panthers. Onlookers thoroughly enjoyed watching these artists unfold their design, in just a short two week period. We were impressed by how quickly and efficiently, Chris and Will worked, while dangling high atop a tower of scaffolding. We appreciated their willingness to repeatedly stop their work to spend time with curious staff and students, teaching us about their process and techniques and posing for countless photos.

Art students in 4th and 5th grade, under the direction of art teacher Erin Ratke, had the unique opportunity to learn alongside the Krieg's mural process. In the classroom, students were learning about the historical significance of murals, the planning and design process to transfer ideas to wall, color theory, and what it means to be a professional artist. Students had the opportunity to talk with the Kriegs and implement their learning in projects they are currently completing in class. Students are creating individual grid drawings to transfer ideas small to large and collaborating with their classmates on smaller scale murals that will be created on large boards that were donated to the school. They were very inspired and excited to meet and talk with professional artists.

It should be noted, Chris Krieg’s artwork can be found on buildings throughout downtown Denver and some of his smaller scale paintings and artwork are available through his Evergreen business located in Evergreen, CO. Chris has had a unique career and we encourage you to learn more about him and his artwork through his website. We think this video is particularly cool!

There is an increased sense of pride in the school as a result of this experience. Parmalee is so grateful. To observe the process, check out our slideshow.
